Objectives

Disciplinary skills and theoretical/methodological competences.
Critical skills and independent judgment.
Learning skills: Critical analysis of the course textbooks.
Applied Methodological Skills : designing and applying research methods in the field.
Communication skills: students will have to participate actively with speeches and lectures

Prerequisites

Students should have the following prerequisite skills: basic knowledge of the historical and methodological debate in sociology. Basic knowledge of philosophical and educational concepts.
No formal academic prerequisites are required.

Contents

Title of the program: "School and childhood in a sociological perspective"
The program consists in the analysis of school processes and of school in every days life.

Lectures will be held on the following subjects (25 hours)
1. The introduction to Sociology: theories and research methods.
2. The changing school in Italy and in the world.
3. The school as an organization.
4. The technological innovation at school.
5. The interaction in the classroom.
6. The socializing processes at school.
7. The teaching profession.
8. The school guidance and choice
9. The teacher - family - students conflicts at school.
10. The school and the reproduction of Social Inequalities.
11. Childhood sociology

Laboratory on research methodologies (15 hours)
1. Methodological Laboratory I: the interview.
2. Methodological Laboratory II: Participatory observation.
On one of the course subjects, students will be required to carry out either observation activities or interviews and write a report of about 5 pages on them.
(Labs are held within the course and different from the institutional ones that the students of Primary Education Science have to complete)

Students activities, public speaking and presentations of research reports: 20 hours

Teaching Methods

a. Lectures on the contents of the program.
b. Public speaking and discussion. Every student will have to give a public speaking on a text or a scientific article.
c.. Empirical work and methodological application. Students will realize a research project applying to empirical sociological methodologies.

Verification of learning

Attending students may be asked to realize practical trials, works and exercises; to submit reports; to give lectures during the class time.

Non attending students will have to take an oral final
The exam will focus on the contents of the books indicated in the program.
Students must show to understand: the theoretical and methodological framework; the articulation / structure of the books and their cultural and scientific goals.

Grades are determined considering following elements.

1. Conceptual precision and clarity in the exposition of the contents of the course.
2. Capacity of analysis
3. Critical skills related to the analysis of the contents.
4. Originality of interpretation and analysis.
5. Capacity of synthesis
Grades:
18 to 22: Indicate an elementary acquisition or basic knowledge of contents and methods. The student shows modest capacity of analysis and synthesis.
23 to 26: Indicate an average acquisition of knowledge of contents and methods. Capacity of analysis and synthesis are sufficient.
27 to 30: Indicate from a good to very good acquisition of knowledge of contents and methods. The student shows good or excellent analytical skills and a very good ability to synthesize.
