Objectives

Knowledge and understanding
At the end of the course students will know:
- the main topics and phenomena of human geography in the present world;
- the theoretical and methodological concepts useful for the educational implementation;
- the technical and scientific jargon of the discipline.

Applying knowledge and understanding
At the end of the course student will know how to:
- investigate and interpret the physical, economic, social and cultural processes in their territorial dimension;
- apply the geographical knowledge and methods for the promotion of active citizenship;
- realize innovative, inclusive and cross-scale educational programs on geographical and territorial themes.

Making judgements
At the end of the course students will know how to:
- evaluate the reliability of data and information sources analytically;
- adapt the educational contents and activities to the specific characteristics of the context and to the pupil;
- analyse the educational actions, either their own, or the others’, critically.

Communication skills
At the end of the course students will know how to:
- present the main topics of human geography in a clear and precise way;
- illustrate the contents of an educational unit clearly and pursue the related aims in captivating ways;
- manage the relations and the communication processes with pupils, families and territorial actors.

Learning skills
At the end of the course students will know how to:
- use bibliographic, webliographic and information tools, in order to update their knowledge and skills;
- refocus contents and strategies along with the territorial and social changes;
- enhance the inter-disciplinary dimension of geography through the collaboration with other teachers.

Prerequisites

A basic knowledge of Italian and world geography and of the major geographic regions is required, along with the fundamentals of geomorphological, climatic and hydrographical dynamics. Sufficient familiarity with the use of maps, cartograms, statistical data, computer and Internet is also required.

Contents

The course will cover topics related to the human geography in the contemporary world. Among the main points:
- the geographic discipline (definitions, methods and tools);
- the population geography (demography, migrations, ethnicities, languages, religions);
- political geography (nations, borders, conflicts);
- urban geography (models, characteristics, dynamics);
- economic geography (development, globalization, agriculture, industry, tertiary);
- environmental geography (natural resources, sustainability).

The Geography Lab will focus on the main methods for teaching geography in primary and nursery schools. Among the main points:
- geography as a science of the territory, the sustainability and the complexity;
- geography as a tool for active citizenship;
- objectives, methods and tools for teaching geography;
- national guidelines for the school curriculum;
- the structure of the learning units of geography.

Teaching Methods

Lectures and co-operative Learning.

Attendance is strongly advised for a proper acquisition of concepts and competences.

Verification of learning

Students will have to demonstrate their knowledge, skills and competence on the interpretation of geographical phenomena in their territorial dimension, and the educational opportunities provided by geography.

Students will have to attend the Geography Lab before taking the examination.

The examination will consist of a written test starting from May 2022.

Students are required to autonomously reinforce the basic knowledge of Italian, European and world geography, and physical geography, which is a precondition for the course. For this purpose, geography schoolbooks for secondary school can be used. The professor is available for clarifications and suggestions.

The use of an atlas along with the texts is recommended during the exam preparation.

- Marshall T. (2017), Le 10 mappe che spiegano il mondo. Milano, Garzanti (introduction and 3 chapters at student's choice). The English edition can be used as well;

- Giorda G. (2014), Il mio spazio nel mondo. Geografia per la scuola dell'infanzia e primaria, Carocci, Roma.

The use of a world atlas is recommended for the exam preparation, with particular attention on the distribution of languages and religions.
