At the end of the course, students will have a good knowledge of the main theoretical and
methodological models of Cultural Anthropology.
Additionally, students will be able to apply the acquired notions and understand the cultural specificities and differences, as well as focus on the intended main subject: the role of school in the contemporary Italian society.
Contents (detailed programs)
The course aims to provide a general view on the development of contemporary Cultural Anthropology.
It will explore tools for the knowledge of the various theoretical and methodological efforts undertaken in this area in order to understand the different cultures in the world. The course will analyze the cultural processes at the basis of human life (communication, knowledge, thinking, identity, gender, kinship, religion, etc), and the role of school "in producing humanity" in the contemporary Italian society.
The course activities will include
- lectures, with ethnographic videos and multimedia presentations (30 h)
- seminars (12 h)
- group work (12 h)
- sessions of in-class discussion focused on specific topics (2h)

Oral exam. Questions will cover and follow the order of the texts listed in the syllabus: students will be first asked to answer about theories in ethnography and second to analyse specific case studies. The final grade will result from the student’s ability to scientifically describe and interpret the ethnographic theoretical approaches and phenomena, by referring to the categories and terminology specifically used in Anthropology.
