Contents

The initial aim of the course is to provide the historical, theoretical, conceptual and methodological foundations of Literature for Children and Youths. The course aims to analyze the concept of literature for children and young people, a discipline of which we will deepen the historical evolution, dwelling on those that are its characteristics both classic and typical of the period closest to us. The lessons will also focus on clarifying the many stereotypes and mistaken projections with respect to this literature, generally seen as simple or serene entertainment, while it contains, at its best, high levels of complexity. Lessons will also be devoted to identifying strategies and methods to educate children and young people to reading and to stimulate in them the necessary motivational processes. A part of them, then, will be specifically focused on the 0-3 years with particular attention to the relationship between early childhood and reading. Reading aloud, animated reading, the construction of the reading environment, the physical relationship with the object-book, reading images, the places where to promote reading, the creative relationship between storytelling, reading and writing: these are just some of the major issues that cross and determine the complex relationship of the child with the literary text and that must be addressed with care and professionalism to counteract the serious problem of distancing young people from the practices of reading and fruition of literary texts.
A specific focus will be on the reading and study of a classic: in this case it is "Alice in Wonderland" by Lewis Caroll, with related film adaptations and artistic reinterpretations.

Teaching Methods

In order to meet the specific teaching needs related to the epidemiological situation, the teaching will be delivered simultaneously both in attendance and online, thus outlining a mixed teaching that can be enjoyed in university classrooms but also at a distance. At the beginning of the semester, each student can opt, with a binding choice, for in-presence or distance learning. Depending on the availability of the classrooms and the number of students who will opt for the in-presence mode, a shift can be planned for the actual access to the courtroom. The lessons for those who will not be in attendance can be followed synchronously or asynchronously.
During the course, film transpositions of literary texts for children will be screened and writers, illustrators, critics, publishers, booksellers, educators, and teachers specialized in children's literature will be invited to give lectures.

Verification of learning

In view of the epidemiological situation, both students who will attend in attendance and students who will attend online classes synchronously or asynchronously will have to take an oral or written test on the examination program and the readings of their choice. The in-presence and/or online mode of the test will depend on the University's instructions at the time of the exam sessions.
The exam verifies the descriptive and critical analysis of the theoretical, methodological and applied issues of literature for children. The students must show a proper language and clear and logical presentation, which should be complete but synthetic.
The exam is expressed in thirtieths. In order to pass the exam that is with a minimum score of 18/30 the student must show a sufficient knowledge of all the addressed topics, with a proper use of the language. In order to achieve the maximum score of 30/30 cum laude, the student must show an excellent knowledge of all the dealt topics, characterized by a critical and coherent elaboration of the proposed topics.
