The course aims to provide an introduction about some statistical methods to analyze relations between variables: Multiple Regression, Analysis of Variance, Analysis of Covariance, Logistic Regression.
At the end of the course considering a specific application context, the student will be alble to choise the most appropriate techniques of multivariate analysis of data. Morover he will be able to understand and comment the results and to be alble to make a social survey or, al least, to understand the results.
He will be able to communicate and argue results to specialists and non-specialists with the necessary awareness regarding the validity of the methods used, their application, the potentialities and, at the same time, the limits. The course also aims to provide students with the knowledge necessary for them to develop further insights, individually, and making judgments.
At the end of the course the student will have acquired the skills necessary to use advanced statistical techniques to conduce researches in the field of social sciences.


Basic concepts of probability theory (random variables and their probability distributions); characteristics of probability distributions (expected value, mean, variance) and most important sample distributions; point estimate; confidence interval; hypotesis tests; association for categoriacal variables; linear univariate ragression model. These prerequisites are earned by students who have passed the examination of the first year of Statistics.

Several case studies will be presented in the classroom, with particular reference to the study of influence of different factors on educational performances.

Teaching Methods

The course will delivered in 18 lectures each of 2 hours. Also some exercises are planned (depending on the availability of a tutor) based on interpretation of the results generated by the most popular statistical softwares. Technical insights will be developed in the "Analysis and management of data for development" laboratory. Teaching will be delivered mainly face to face, integrated and "augmented" with online strategies, in order to guarantee its use in an innovative and inclusive way.

Verification of learning

The assessment consists of a written essay (exam) which contains two exercices with 2-3 questions each about theoretical and Interpretative aspects.
The student will have to demonstrate the ability to understand the information from a system of statistical indicators, to select tools for monitoring a phenomenon through a system of indicators, to understand the results and to synthesize them for comparative and cognitive purposes.
Examination score is expressed in thirty points.
The purpose of the discussion is to give the student the opportunity to view the elaborate and to get clarifications about the evaluation received.

At the end of the discussion the results will be published and registered through the Esse3 system

In the assessment process the determination of the mark will take into account the following aspects:
1. the logic followed by the student in providing the answers to the research or theoretical questions;
2. the correctness of the information provided and the procedures;
3. the completeness of the information;
4. the cability to discuss results;
5. the use of an adequate statistical language;
6. the ability to communicate the results in written form and to highlight the most relevant aspects with a critical spirit.

The fulfillment of the first two aspects is a necessary condition to get a positive evaluation.
The fulfillment also of aspects 3 and 4 allows to get an overall achievement more than positive, which depends on clearness and completeness of the answers provided.
Final marks higher than 26 will be awarded to exams which meets all six aspects and the mark will vary depending on the degree of satisfaction of the last two conditions.
Due to the epidemiological situation due to the pandemic, the exams will be face-to-face, and everyone will receive a QR code for access to the classroom. Any oral interview will be held remotely on the Microsoft Teams platform. All information will be provided through Esse3
