At the end of the course the student is expected to have enhanced her knowledge of contemporary political systems obtained during her studies at the first-level degree. Particular emphasis will be placed on the functioning of electoral arenas, featuring citizens whose behaviors and choices are similar to those of consumers in the economic field. The student will be able to follow the political events of representative democracies with competence, to develop personal points of view and to intervene properly in discussions dedicated to them.
To effectively attend the Politics and Communication course, the student must have previously acquired the basic knowledge of political science taught in the three-year courses. This course deals with issues related to political marketing. In addition to the consideration of general theories and basic concepts, the strategies for conducting electoral campaigns in contemporary political systems will be examined, put into practice through both direct contacts with voters and the mass media. The methods of segmentation of the electoral market, the positioning of parties and the construction of the image of candidates will be explored.
54 hours of face-to-face lessons are provided, with the possibility of interventions by students in the form of reports and presentations. The lessons, delivered in English, are divided into two modules. The teaching methods may vary based on the decisions of the political, health and academic authorities relating to the progress of the pandemic.
Verification of learning
Written test in Italian, English or French; candidates may choose the preferred language.
Even if the final score is unique, the exam is divided into two parts, and each program correspond to the two modules in which the lessons are divided.
For each part of the exam, the candidate will be asked three open-ended questions to be dealt with in an hour and a half, with only one protocol sheet available. Each question will be assigned a score from 0 to 10. The score for each of the two parts, between 0 and 30, is given by the sum of the scores obtained for each question. The final evaluation is calculated as the average of the scores obtained on each of the two parts. In the event of a score of 30 for both modules, honors are awarded.
The exam can take place in two ways. The evaluation and voting criteria are the same in all cases.
1) Those attending the exam in different sessions are initially engaged, at will between the November and July sessions, for an hour and a half on the first part only. They will be given a provisional vote. The exam on the second part can be taken in any subsequent session by September (included). It is not possible to take the second part of the exam first.
2) Those who take the exam in full on the same day are committed consecutively for three hours. If the first part is passed, but the second is not, the provisional vote remains valid until September; if the first part is not passed, the exam has failed and must be repeated in its entirety.
To establish the votes, the comprehensibility of the description of events, theories and research results will be taken into account; the use of correct writing; the use of appropriate terminology; the ability to give a logical course to the text.
If the pandemic persists, the exams will be conducted orally via the Teams platform.
