The course is aimed at the students' acquisition of in-depth theoretical and practical knowledge on sustainable tourism development and labour in the tourism sector. Students will have to elaborate a critical reflection, starting from the project activities they have carried out, on the interconnections between labour, tourist practices and regional economic development. The students will be asked to reflect, first of all, on the strategies that can contribute to an improvement in working conditions and a stabilization of career paths in tourism. Secondly, they will have to reflect about how to improve an awareness of the strategic importance and centrality of these same dimensions among the touristic actors in Sardinia. The goal is to build a touristic offer for a national and international clientele, sensitive to the problems of justice and social inclusion, gender equality and sustainable development. The expected learning outcomes, in line with the training objectives of the laboratory, are defined as follows:
knowledge and understanding: students should be able to interpret the main statistical data on tourism labour and tourism development.
ability to apply knowledge and understanding: the students, working as a team during the implementation of the project activity, will consolidate the ability to project, coordinate and carry out empirical surveys in the tourism field, treatment and analysis of data for sustainable tourism development also through the use of software specifically dedicated to social sciences.
autonomy of judgment: students must be able to deal creatively and autonomously with the problem of sustainable tourism development, with reference to the issues of work and tourism practices.
communication skills: the project activity will end with the presentation of the results and with the classroom discussion of the strategies and solutions developed by the students, in order to consolidate their competence in the formulation and communication of political-institutional topics.
learning skills: the practical and experimental dimension of the laboratory responds to the need to enhance students' ability to be flexible in applying solutions to new problems (the quality of work within a model of sustainable tourism development) and to develop a plan of the activities.
- Knowledge of the main theories and problems of economic and labor sociology.
- Familiarity with social science research tools.
- Ability to interpret statistical data.
The first part of the laboratory provides a theoretical introduction essential to acquire the conceptual instrumentation necessary for the implementation of the design activity. During the first lectures of the laboratory, the following will be presented: 1) the main results of the international literature on labour in tourism, focusing in particular on the problem of quality of labour; 2) the concept of sustainable tourism development.
The second part of the workshop will instead focus on the preparation and discussion of the students' design activities. Working in small teams of 3-4 members, students will have to carry out a research project aimed at studying, using different qualitative and quantitative methodologies (in-depth interviews, questionnaires, content analysis ...), the quality of labour in the sector tourism in Sardinia and the way in which tourism institutions and businesses, especially those that explicitly support a sustainable tourism development model, propose or not a narration on the working conditions of their workers in the field of communication and marketing.
The workshop will be divided into six lessons for a total duration of 18 hours. The first two lessons will be devoted to the concise presentation of the main results and debates of the international literature on labour in tourism and sustainable tourism development. The other four lessons will instead be dedicated to the preparation and presentation of the students' research activities.
Verification of learning
Verification of learning will be carried out in two ways: a) a first ongoing test on the theoretical part of the laboratory b) the evaluation of the students' research activity.
The teaching materials will be available, in electronic format, in the personal space of the students. The teacher will also provide suggestions that will allow to deepen the study of the topics covered during the workshop individually through the use of additional bibliographic and audiovisual references.
