Objectives

Expected knowledge and skills: depending on the student’s starting level and teacher effectiveness, the course aims to provide students with an acceptable / above-average/excellent:
- knowledge of the history of the basic concepts of Glottology and General Linguistics;
- ability to trace a particular linguistic phenomenon back to a school of thought or to the scholar who elaborated it;
- ability to reflect on linguistic metalanguage, sometimes even in a contrastive way (see Italian terminology versus English terminology).

Prerequisites

Students must have already passed Glottology and Linguistics or General Linguistics. They should be interested in learning about the history of Linguistic concepts and theories.

Contents

Introduction to the discipline; Brief history of the discipline; History of the main methods; History of the most important instruments; Reasons why the history of modern academic disciplines is important.
Salient aspects of the history of nineteenth and twentieth century Linguistics; Analysis of the main concepts of phonetics, phonology, morphology, semantics and syntax, with particular regard to the sources and the metalanguage used in these areas of Linguistics

Teaching Methods

- lectures
- practice exercises on sources in the classroom and/or in the library
- checking of students’ notes
- correction of exercises (e.g. possible exercises: analysis of a term in the Linguistics dictionary, content analysis of a Journal on Linguistic History).

Verification of learning

Examination methods
Written test: 6 questions about programme contents ( students will sit a mock exam before the end of the course); a list of practice questions will also be provided as an aid to preparation);
- the final vote will be assigned according to the following criteria:
• students’ ability to work with and around the various historical phases of the discipline;
• ability to identify the main Linguistics sources;
• ability to trace a concept or a term back to the appropriate source;
• descriptive and argumentative abilities;
• syntactically correct writing and use of appropriate terminology

Tips for passing the exam:
Regular attendance at lectures and practicals; take clear and extensive notes during lessons and copy them up on a regular basis if necessary; do the exercises assigned by the teacher; attend class-corrections of exercises; attend tutorials with the teacher classroom; sit the mock exam; do the end-of-course exercises assigned by the teacher as exam preparation (see list of questions on course content).

Non-attending students should contact the teacher at least two months before the exam so as to receive as much information as possible on exam preparation and thus improve their chances of passing.
