Objectives

At the end of the course, students should have acquired analytical and argumentative skills and competence in on the presence of the author in a literary text. Students will develop reading, comprehension and critical response skills, such as the ability to critically discuss the literature of alterity during class lectures and discussions.
By the end of the semester, students should be able to produce a written essay ready (possibly) for publication.

Prerequisites

An adequate knowledge of the literary language and of contemporary Italian literary history is required.
A basic knowledge of the main methodological orientations of literary criticism is needed. You must have an oral and written ability to analyze the linguistic structures of a literary text. One must be able to contextualize forms and meanings of the text in relation to the specific historical-cultural context.

Contents

The course will focus on the study of Aracoeli di Elsa Morante. Published in 1982, this was the last novel by the Roman writer. We will be studying family relations and alterity aside from the study of the body in this novel forty years after its publication.
Critical works on the text are also part of the program.
Mandatory presence at the conference on Aracoeli to be held on May 19-20.

Teaching Methods

a) lectures (20h); analysis of literary texts in their expressive and rhetorical relevance; autofiction as part of contemporary Italian novel.

2. Seminar classes (10 h):

b) The active participation of students in seminar moments: with a critical comment in the form of a lecture, a written report on texts studied, elaboration of elementary bibliographic paths will be evaluated as an intermediate exam.
To satisfy specific teaching needs tied with the epidemiological situation, some classes will be held on streaming or recordings of the same available on-line.

Verification of learning

Written essay of 3750 words (bibliography and notes excluded) to be turned in 15 days prior to the date of the exam on a subject discussed with the professor and after her agreement.
Students should show an excellent knowledge of the literary texts in the program, awareness of the linguistic and structural complexity of literary texts. Students will have to demonstrate the ability to use the critical and methodological tools indicated in the bibliography, making use of the specialized lexicon of literary disciplines.
Students will have to take into consideration the literary texts on which the verification takes place, as well as the critical texts and any other useful tool (sheets, notes, summaries) that can be consulted during the interrogation. The test will have an excellent evaluation in which the student demonstrates to have acquired the knowledge and the skills necessary to analyse in depth the texts and to know how to insert them in an organic vision in relation to the problems of the monographic course.
