Objectives

The main learning goals of the course are:
- The knowledge of a basic outline of the cultural sequence of the prehistory and protohistory of Sardinia, in the frame of its interregional and Mediterranean relationships;
- The skill in identifying and putting into the correct chronological and cultural perspective the main material and symbolic productions of Sardinian prehistoric and protohistoric cultures;
- The skill in the use of the main critical tools in order to reach a proper interpretation of the archeological issues, with specific reference to the Prehistory and Protohistory of Sardinia;
- The skill to produce and acquire cognitive data on prehistoric and protohistoric contexts and sites, with specific reference to the region of Sardinia;
- providing the skill to carry out bibliographic and archive research.
- providing the skill to perform graphic material on prehistoric and protohistoric archaeological contexts and monuments, with specific reference to the region of Sardinia.
- The expertise on the technical terminology in the practice of typo-technological classification of prehistoric and protohistoric artifacts.

Prerequisites

The following prerequisites are considered: the basic knowledge of the methods and aims of the historic research, as well as the principles of prehistoric and protohistoric archeology, from the interdisciplinary fieldwork to the final interpretation; the knowledge of the stratigraphic excavation techniques and of the methods of documentation, analysis, classification, and preservation procedures of archaeological artifacts and ecofacts; an adequate knowledge of the geography and ecology of Sardinia. Good language skills are considered to be fundamental.

Contents

A Unit - The prehistory of Sardinia
Syllabus: an outline of the cultural sequence of Sardinian prehistory, from the first human presence up to the Eneolithic and to the transitional process to the first protohistoric social organizations. Chronology, ecology, economy, models of social organization, settlement patterns, material and symbolic production of prehistoric communities of Sardinia. Definition of the nature and modes of interregional interactions basing on peculiar indicators of the archaeological record. Explanatory models of the cultural evolutionary processes and of the changes in social organizations until the decline of segmental societies.

B Unit - The Protohistory of Sardinia
Outline of the Protohistory of Sardinia, from the late Copper Age to the Iron Age. Chronological and cultural framework of the Protohistory of Sardinia in the wider Mediterranean context. The advanced and final Copper Age: Monte Claro and Beaker Cultures. Early Bronze Age: the Bonnanaro culture. Chronological characteristics of the Nuragic Civilization from Middle Bronze Age to the First Iron Age. Settlement patterns, architecture and material culture of the Nuragic Civilization. Economy and social organization in Nuragic times.

Teaching Methods

A Unit - The Prehistory of Sardinia
Lectures (22 hours) with preliminary test on prerequisites and intermediate tests on the learning process. Laboratory exercises on different categories of material productions of the prehistory of Sardinia are planned, as well as visits to museum collections and/or to archaeological sites under excavation (8 hours).

Unit B - The Protohistory of Sardinia
Lectures (30 hours). The topics of the course will be treated with special reference to important case studies.

It will be possible to have recourse to live streaming of the lectures to fulfill specif teaching needs, according to the epidemic evolution. Furthermore, tests could be performed interacting at distance through the available information system.

Verification of learning

A Unit - The Prehistory of Sardinia
Oral exam: whole evaluation obtained by summing up the average evaluation of each one of the following four topics (expressed in thirtieth fraction):
1) Chronologic classification of one or more cultures of the prehistory of Sardinia
2) Identification and correct chrono-cultural attribution of specific material and/or symbolic productions of Sardinian prehistory, presented to the candidate in form of original and/or as a picture
3) Critical interpretation weather of individual stages or of the whole evolutionary process of prehistoric societies of Sardinia
4) Diachronic and synchronic general classification of prehistoric cultures of Sardinia, in the frame of their possible reciprocal interactions with the wider Western Mediterranean region.

B Unit - The Protohistory of Sardinia
Oral exam. Three to five questions will be asked. Questions will be addressed to test the learning of the course with regard both to the lectures and to the contents of the recommended bibliography. The exam will check the skill to analyze and to relate the different topics of the course, as well as the ability to speak and present the matter with correctness and property. Students with a good qualification will get a rate from 18 to 30, accordingly to the learning and skill levels; students revealing an excellent qualification will get top marks to the exam.

A Unit - The Prehistory of Sardinia
Slides presentation containing the topics of the course will be furnished at the end of the lectures.
The main evolutionary stages of the technology of artifacts productions of Sardinian prehistory will be summarized by means of original finds. Further information and bibliographic integrations will be provided during the course and/or may be requested directly to the professor.
Attendance at classes is strongly recommended. Students who may not attend at the course have to arrange supplementary bibliography with the professor.

Attendance at classes and other teaching activities is strongly recommended. Further bibliographic integrations will be provided during the course. Students who may not attend at the course have to arrange supplementary bibliography with the professor. Teaching needs permitting, both field trips in Sardinia and exercises of stratigraphic excavations will be carried out.
