Objectives

BASICS OF OCCUPATIONAL MEDICINE MED / 44 (CFU 2)
The principles of occupational safety and health. The factors that can be induce the adverse health effects in an occupational environment. The major occupational disease and work accident. Knowledge in order to be able to participate in preventative actions in occupational environment.

ENVIRONMENTAL HYGIENE MED/42 (CFU 3)
Environmental factors that can be induce adverse effects on the environment and people. Environmental protection legislation. Instruments for monitoring the quality of air, water and soil. Basics knowledge to investigation and identify the environmental risks and contamination sources in air, water and soil. Knowledge in order to be able to participate in preventative actions in environment.
Knowledge and comprehension ability. At the end of the study students will be provided with:
-the basic knowledge about the organism functions, from a cellular-molecular level to the study of the integrated systems, and of the interactions between the different integrated systems in order to assure the homeostatic equilibrium needed for vital functions;
- the basic knowledge about the main pathways associated with organism responses to pathological events, cell ability to overcome cell damage, cell death mechanisms, tissue repair, and tumor development.
Autonomy of judgement. Students will be acquire a synthetic, clear and pertinent vision of the cell and tissue functions in order to comprehend thematic related to normal and pathological structures and functions of human body.
Communication ability: Students will be acquire the ability to explain with propriety of language the molecular events related to living organisms.

BASICS OF OCCUPATIONAL MEDICINE MED / 44 (CFU 2)
The principles of occupational safety and health. Occupational protection Italian legislation (D.Lgs. 81/08).
The factors that can be induce the adverse health effects in an occupational environment. The major occupational disease and work accident (Risks of an injured nature, environmental hazards and transverse hazards).

ENVIRONMENTAL HYGIENE MED/42 (CFU 3)
Environmental factors that can induce adverse effects on the environment and people. Environmental protection legislation. Instruments for monitoring the quality of air, water, and soil.
Atmospheric pollution: major sources of emissions and pollutants, effects on man and the environment, techniques for monitoring the atmospheric pollutants, and the sanitary significance.
Water pollution: the main hydro-diffuse pollutants and the effects on human health and the environment. Hydrodynamic pollutant monitoring techniques.
The soil. Pollution and contaminated sites. The impact of waste on the environment and on health. Waste collection, disposal, classification, and management: landfills, incinerators, waste collection, recycling ,and reforestation.

GENERAL PATHOLOGY (CFU2)
Introduction to Pathology
Difference between physiologic and pathologic; elements characterizing a pathological process: eziology, pathogenesis, morphological modifications, clinical outcome.

Adaption of cell to stress
Ipertrophy, iperplasia, atrophy and metaplasia.

Cell damage
General biochemical mechanisms, reversible and irreversible damage.

Cell death
Necrosis (coagulative and colliquative necrosis) and apoptosis (extrinsic and intrinsic)

Immunology
General characteristics of the immune system (components, functions, alterations)
Natural immunity (cellular and soluble factors)
Acquired immunity (T and B lymphocytes: ontogeny, receptors, phenotype and functions)
Antigens, antibodies (structures, functions, classes); antigen-antibody interactions
Human Major Histocompatibility Complex
Lymphocyte T activation and cell-mediated immunity
Lymphocyte B activation and humoral immunity

Acute inflammation
Vascular modifications (vascular permeability and edema, mediators of increased permeability in inflammatory edema, adhesion molecules), cellular recruitment (inflammatory cell activation, mechanisms of inflammatory cell functions, Outcomes of inflammation, cellular and plasmatic mediators of inflammation.

Tissue repair
Cell cycle regulation; regeneration and fibrosis

Oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes
Benign and malignant tumors (classification, morphological, biochemical and behavioral characteristics, angiogenesis, local invasion, metastatic process)

Teaching Methods

frontal lessons.

Verification of learning

Oral and written exams and written and / or oral exams during the periods provided by the faculty calendar. They will be evaluated: knowledge acquisition, knowledge of disciplinary language, ability to relate concepts and knowledge, exhibition skills. The final vote of the CI depends on an algorithm that takes into account the weight of each course in terms of CFU.
