Course Curriculum CFU Length(h)


To acquire analytical and argumentative skills and competence in the presence of the author in a literary text. Students will develop reading, comprehension, and critical response skills, such as the ability to critically discuss the evolution of the role of the author during class lectures and discussions.


Knowledge: of nineteenth and twentieth centuries Italian literary tradition and periods and the fundamental historical and cultural issues as a whole; basic skills on the critical and methodological problems of literary modernity.

Skills: good active and passive knowledge of written and oral Italian; adequate presentation skills both in the oral as in the written language.


The objectives of this course are the recognition of the importance that gender discrimination has constituted at the level of biopolitics which leads as a corollary to the examination of otherness in the Italian literary narrative. ) the concept of citizenship of rights starting from the formulation of T. H. Marshall; 2) Different chronologies of obtaining rights by women and men in Italy and in the world; legislative systems and effectiveness 3) transnational feminist theories / feminisms; 45) the city from a gender point of view / the environment and the territory / climate change from a gender perspective; 6) the representation of bodies, the role of the media and stereotypes of language
7) violence, homophobia, LGBTQI rights 8) reproductive rights
After some lectures on gender politics, the course will focus on the study of Otherness in Italian literature with the novel Aracoeli by Elsa Morante

Teaching Methods

1. Lectures (h. 20):

a) analysis of literary texts in their expressive and rhetorical relevance; family novel as a subgenre of the contemporary Italian novel.
Rhetorical and narrative tools/strategies i.e. the chronotope, the role of the narrator, character's agency.

2. Seminar classes :

a) The active participation of students in seminar moments: with a critical comment in the form of a lecture, a written report on texts studied, elaboration of elementary bibliographic paths will be evaluated as an intermediate exam.
To satisfy specific teaching needs tied with the epidemiological situation, some classes will be held on streaming or recordings of the same available on-line.

Verification of learning

For attending students : 1) Written essay (3750 words); 2) oral presentation during the semester.
For non-attending students: Oral examination.

Attending students should have an excellent knowledge of the literary texts in the program, awareness of the linguistic and structural complexity of literary texts. Students will have to demonstrate the ability to use the critical and methodological tools indicated in the bibliography, making use of the specialized lexicon of literary disciplines.
Students will have to take into consideration the literary texts on which the verification takes place, as well as the critical texts and any other useful tool (sheets, notes, summaries) that can be consulted during the interrogation.
Each essay will receive an excellent evaluation if the student demonstrates to have acquired the knowledge and the skills necessary to analyze in-depth the texts and to know how to insert them in an organic vision in relation to the problems of the monographic course. The correct reading of the texts and mastery of the critical and methodological lexicons are an integral part of the exam.

In proportion, failure to meet the previous requirements, in learning and oral expression, will lead to average or just sufficient assessments; until the test is not passed in cases where only partial and incomplete knowledge of the scheduled literary texts is ascertained.

More Information

Non-attending students will prepare this same program to the exam WITHOUT the written essay.
Possible reductions of the program will be made, during the didactic activity, in favor of attending students.

During the reading and analysis of texts, we recommend the constant use of a good vocabulary of the Italian language, in order to verify the meanings of the Italian literary lexicon.
