Objectives

Students will be expected to gain knowledge of health problems and determinants in the community and in care in the dental settings, major epidemiologic study designs, prevention technologies for infectious disease, and how to select effective technologies.

Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of statistics and microbiology

Contents

Natural history of the disease
Measurements of frequency of health events. Incidence rate, prevalence rate.
Epidemiologic studies: observational, analytical, experimental
The epidemiological model of infectious diseases. Transmission routes
Criteria of classification of biological agents according to 81/08 Law
The transmission and prevention of infections in the dental practice (cross infection)
Vaccinations
Standard and transmission precautions;
DPI the personal protective equipments
Sterilization; disinfection; waste disposal

Teaching Methods

Frontal lesson whenever is possible
Availability of slides.

Verification of learning

Written verification with open-ended questions ;
Presentation of hygienic problems in the activity of the dental practice and request for solutions;
