According to the descriptors of Dublin, the course aim to spread the knowledge of the main obstetrical and perinatal pathologies, to evaluate the learning with simulated clinical cases and interactive lessons, to evaluate the practical use of the acquired knowledge, to evaluate the ability of making their own opinion by using information coming from external sources of which some examples of utilization are provided, to give communicative abilities with particular attention to the parental communication, to the monitoring of the efficacy of the bidirectional communication of which some examples are provided, to the observation and the understanding of the gestural communication, to the modality of avoiding communicative conflicts of opposition favoring the communication with instructions and dialogue techniques.
At the end of the course, the student must know the structural and functional features of an obstetrical hospital care and in several obstetrical diseases, the correct approach to obstetrics emergencies, the intervention of health education, the peculiarities of the assistive process in the maternal-perinatal.
At the end of the course the student must be able to:
1)Describe the peculiarities of the assistive process in obstetrical area.
2)Describe the modalities of the detection of the individual and collective needs of the obstetrical population.
3)Describe the general and specific elements for the obstetrical assistance correlated to physio-pathological alterations of the different sistems and/or apparatuses in pregancy.
4)Show the ability of diagnostic reasoning to manage specific cases.

At the end of the course the student must be able to:
1.Provide information and give advice to the pregnant woman, to the couple in the birth journey, giving correct, appropriate and personalized information on obstetrical and perinatal diseases;
2.Identify the health and social needs of the pregnant woman providing every informative-educational support that aims to solve situations of discomfort, fragility in the presence of diseases during pregnancy;
3.Plan interventions of information/formation for the mother and give advice on exams and clinical evaluations in cases of suspected pathologies during pregnancy for the mother or the fetus;
4.Know the main obstetric diseases and the gynecological pathologies that can interfere with fertility in order to guide the women in the most correct prevention, diagnosis and therapy courses.

The course aims at teaching the basis of clinical knowledge for the most important gynecological, oncological, cardiovascular and urological pathologies that cause disability.


Diseases during pregnancy and pregnancy induced diseases.

Metabolic diseases. Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and pregestational diabetes.

Endocrine diseases.


Autoimmune diseases

Kidney diseases.

Chronic hypertension.

Pregnancy induced hypertension, preeclampsia, eclampsia.

Cancers and pregnancy.

Trofoblastic diseases.

Third trimester hemorrhage.

Intrauterine growth retardation.

Prenatal diagnosis.


Preterm delivery, post-term pregancy.

Ectopic pregnancy.

Obstetric surgerie

Teaching Methods

The course is made of a serie of formal lectures with slide projections summurizing the core points of the topic. Whenever necessary for a better comprehension, such as for the description of special diagnostic manoveur or technical procedures, videos or animations will complement slide projections. Participation of the students during lectures will be elicited by frequent questions on the topic presented.

Verification of learning

Student evaluation will be based on a written test with open answer to single questions or by an oral test. The students should correctly answer showing in an appropriate mode his knowledge of the topic. To obtain the maximum score students should correctly answer to all qustions. In case of low score, students can chose to engage in an oral test. All tests beyond the first will be oral and evaluation will take into account the comprehensive knowledge achieved as well as the logical reasoning and the ability to link and use knowledge derived from previous basic studies with the knowledge specific of the discipline under evaluation. Students will be evaluated even for the fluency of their language and for the ability with which they express their concepts and knowledge.
