Objectives

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: The general objective of the course is to prepare the fundamental (theoretical, practical and methodological) tools that allow the student understanding the transformations of the traditional forms of the story in today's digital and multimedia environment and acquire the needed expertise to create a website using WordPress, one of the most famous Content Management System (CMS).
APPLICATION CAPACITIES: Students must be able to apply the new narrative formats to the most diverse working environments related to communication: from journalism to publishing, from scientific dissemination to advertising, from political communication to the promotion of the territory and cultural heritage. These narrative formats will then be transferred to a web context using WordPress and employing the tools that WordPress offers.
JUDGMENT AUTONOMY: At the end of the course students must be able to develop storytelling projects based on the communication objectives that they have independently fixed and on the basis of the media they intend to use. As for the creation of the website, students will be able to see their results immediately on the screen working locally in their PC being able to judge their own work independently.
ABILITY IN COMMUNICATION: students must be able to translate any other type of text into narrative format and adapt it to all the media. Furthermore, these formats must be transferred to a website for efficient and impactful digital communication.
LEARNING SKILLS: students will develop a methodology of study and analysis that allows them interpreting and deepening the problems related to the evolution and transformation of storytelling techniques that will be presented in the remainder of their studies and in the future work within the field of communication and media. In addition, students will learn what they need to put on a website, starting from the domain, from the web space for hosting to the actual creation using WordPress and the tools it offers.
EXPECTED SKILLS: development of the ability to draft communication and promotional strategies based on digital storytelling and creation of a website using WordPress and its related tools.

Prerequisites

Knowledge of the basic notions of narratology in the literary and film fields.
For those who do not have specific preparation in these fields, it is advisable to read the following texts:

Contents

The first half of the course will be divided into two phases: (i) in a first phase it will be shown the reasons why storytelling practices, starting from the nineties of the twentieth century, have spread explosively in all areas of consumerist and technologically advanced companies: politics, journalism, advertising, personnel management, teaching, valorization of cultural heritage and territories, etc. (ii) In the second phase, in cooperation with the course of Semiotics of Media, the focus will be on storytelling applied to the publishing market: issues related to the digitization of the book, its promotion and online distribution, the change in reading practices, self publishing, social reading, fanfiction, etc.
The second part of the course will focus on the creation of a website and related activities. Students will see how to choose the domain for a website, the space for hosting and the various possibilities, how to develop the website using WordPress and how to upload the related files on the remote web hosting. WordPress will be illustrated with the related features, tools, plugins, themes, styles and opportunities that offers. Students will have also the opportunity to go behind the schemes and go a little deeper towards the sections of WordPress that require some web programming.

Teaching Methods

The teaching will be delivered in presence but, considering the contents and the training objectives, it will also make use of online teaching tools. Students can choose to attend the course in "active" mode (actively participating in lectures and workshops, constantly interacting with the teacher, being engaged in group work) or in "classical" mode, individually studying the texts in the program.
To develop the program, the class is divided into 30 meetings of 2 hours each (of lectures and discussion, simulations of tests and exercises) and a series of workshops (WordPress, website creation, selection of the domain, upload of the website, etc.) dedicated to students who attend in "active" mode.
Group work: students wishing to attend the course in "active" mode will be involved in group work aimed at creating storytelling projects that include the creation of a website in WordPress.

Verification of learning

The methods of examination differ depending on whether the student attends in "active" or "classical" mode.
"Active" mode: two ongoing tests; delivery of group work, essentially the design of a communication campaign based on digital storytelling, in the form of a final report, script, screenplay, audiovideo and website.
Criteria for awarding the final grade (expressed in thirtieths): the level of information literacy (ability to identify, identify, evaluate, organize, use and communicate information) will be evaluated at the end of the course; the ability to work in groups and to respect the tasks (ongoing tests) assigned by the teacher during the course; the level of correspondence between the group final work and the training objectives. In addition, the website will be evaluated depending on the following metrics: which WordPress tools have been used and how, the graphic design, the use of employed media, the size and complexity of the site, and its optimization.
"Classic" mode (final grade expressed in thirtieths): an oral test on the texts in the program. During the test the student will have to demonstrate to be able to apply the tool of the storytelling to the various contexts of use and media environments. Moreover, students will have to demonstrate how to create a website, what it is needed for its creation and publication, what a CMS is, how WordPress works, how to create a site using WordPress and how to upload the web site in the chosen hosting solution.

Those who attend in "active" mode are exempted from studying one of the texts. As far as WordPress and the creation of websites are concerned, several manuals, slides, documents will be included on the site of the teacher.
If requested, foreign students attending the course (e.g., Erasmus students) can be provided alternative references in English. In this case their knowledge will be tested in English.*
