The objective of the course of Pharmacotherapy is to have the student able to identify the rational therapy of the main disorders that can be diagnosed in men. The student will have to acquire the knowledge of symptomatology, physiopathology, clinical features of the main disorders. The student will have to know the drugs used for the therapy of each illness. He will need to know the mechanism of action, the route of administration, the main side effects and interactions of the drug used. At the end of the course the student will have acquired the basic knowledge for the use of drugs in each specific therapy. The student will have to possess suitable communicative skills, and the ability to use the appropriate terminology in describing the features of the illness and the effect of drug used. . The main side effects and interactions of the most used drugs will be discussed. Knowledge of different class of drugs therapeutic effects
The course of Pharmacotherapy is a rather complex course and the knowledge can be acquired optimally only if the student possesses the basic knowledge of physiology, biochemistry and general pharmacology and has passed the relative exams. In particular, to pass the exam of general pathology is not strictly required but is strongly advised. Biochemistry Physiology and General Pharmacology.
The course of Pharmacotherapy will examine the main disorders that affect men. For each disorder, it will be presented the diagnostic criteria, epidemiology, physiopathology, and therapy. The main drugs used in the therapy, their mechanism of action, their side effects, the interaction with other drugs and above all, be discussed how to select the best therapy for the disorder examined. The disorders examined, the most important drugs used in therapy and the relative credits are listed below: PSICHOSIS and MANIA: antipsychotics (AP), chlorpromazine, haloperidol, pimozide, aripriprazole, clozapine, olanzapine, quietapine, risperidone (0.5 CFU); DEPRESSION and antidepressants (AD), selective (S) serotonin (S) reuptake inhibitors (RI), SNorepinephrine RI and S S&N RI, atypical AD, tricyclic AD, MAO (0.5 CFU); ANXIETY and RELATED DISORDES (benzodiazepines, antidepressants, buspirone (0.25 CFU); EPILEPSY (0,25 CFU); SLEEP DISORDERS and NARCOLEPSY (0.25 CFU); NEURODEGENERATIVE DISORDERDS (0.25 CFU); PARKINSON (levodopa-carbidopa, selegiline, rasagiline, COMT inhibitors, pramipexolo, rotigotine, amantidine) and HANTINGTON disorders (0.25 CFU); ALZHEIMER disorder (acelylcholine inhibitors, NMDA-receptor antagonists) and ALS (riluzole) (0.25). PHARMCOTHERPAY OF DEPENDENCE (0.5 CFU). Will be considered the drugs used in the dependene from NICOTINE, ALCOHOL, MORPHINE, CANNABINOIDS, COCAINE and other PSYCHOSTIMULANTS. CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM: HYPERTENSION (0.2 CFU); RENIN-ANGIOTENSIN System (0.25 CFU); ACE INHIBITORS (0.25 CFU); HEART FAILURE (0.2 CFU); . DIURETCS (0.4 CFU); ARRHYTHITHMIAS (0.2 CFU); ANGINA (0.2 CFU).DYSLIPIDAEMIAS (0.5 CFU) Inhibitors of HMC-CoA; Inhibitors of cholesterol absorption; Drugs that can sequestrate biliary acids; fibrate derivatives. PHARMACOTERAPY OF PAIN (0.5 CFU): Different types of pain; morphine and other analgesic opioids; endogenous, agonist, partial agonist and antagonists opioid; guide lines for the treatment of pain. Pharmacotherapy of INFLAMMATION, PAIN, FEVER and pharmacotherapy of gout (0,5 CFU): NSAIDs and specific drugs (acetaminophen, aspirin and other salicylates; AUTACOIDS (prostaglandins, histamine and serotonin) use in therapy (0,5 CFU); Pharmacotherapy of RESPIRATORY system (ASTHMA and CHRONIC OBSTRUCTIVE PULMONARY D; ISEASE (0,5 CFU): Bronco dilatators, corticosteroids, theophylline, anticholinergic agents, antileukotriens, immunomodulatory therapies. ; Pharmacotherapy of GASTRIC DIESEASES (0.5 CFU): adsorbent agents, proton pump inhibitors, H2 receptor antagonists, misoprostol, sucralfate, antacids: Therapy of gastroesophageal reflux disease and peptic ulcer disease. Therapy of GASTROINTESTINAL diseases (0.2 CFU): prokinetic agents and other stimulants of GI motility (Dopamine and serotonin agents). Laxatives, cathartics and therapy of constipation. Anticholinergic, opioids, 5-HT3 receptor antagonists: Pharmacotherapy of disorders of ION HOMEOSTASIS AND BONE METABOLISM (0.1 CFU). Therapy OBESITY (0.1 CFU) Sibutramin, Orlistat and Liraglutide. Therapy of OSTEOPOROSIS (0.1 CFU) hypercalcemia and hypocalcemia. Pharmacotherapy of erectile dysfunction (0.1 CFU).
The course of Pharmacotherapy will be available for the students of the course of Pharmaceutical Chemistry ( CTF) and for those of FARMACIA. At 2/3 of program, students can test their knowledge The teachers, will be available for providing any explanation or any further deepening of the subjects presented. A copy of the material presented to the class can be requested and obtained by the students. It cannot be exhaustive and has to be integrated with written notes taken during lessons and by by the content of advised books of pharmacotherapy or pharmacology, as well as phytotherapy.
Verification of learning
"Learning will be tested by a written test for the first segment and by an oral test for the second. Alternatively, students can be tested on the full program (syllabus) in one single exam session. The final grade will be established on the bases of
a) general knowledge of contents on disorders, therapy an drugs, but also ability to explain the rationale of the use for the description of the disorder and of the therapy chosen. b) Exposition ability, use of a proper and synthetic language.
The final evaluation can be
a) Satisfactory/Acceptable standard (18 to 23/30) when the candidate shows to possess a sufficient grade of knowledge that allows him to express coherent conclusions, although the student has been struggling to reach the conclusions.
c) Good/Exceeds acceptable standard (from 24 to 27/30)
The candidate shows to possess an almost complete grade of knowledge that allows him to express coherent conclusions in an ordered and clear exposition, although the student can be uncertain about details.
c) Excellent/standard of excellence (from 28 to 30/30)
The candidate shows to possess a complete grade of knowledge that allows him to express coherent conclusions synthetically in an ordered and very clear exposition, reach of detail and logic conclusions.
Laude will be given to candidates really above standard levels, who shows a full grade of knowledge of the material of the course but also possesses a level of knowledge acquired through updated scientific journals. "
