1. Knowledge and understanding
The course aims to provide students with a thorough knowledge of European history in the XX Century, with a focus on the period after 1945. Students will learn to think about t the meaning of European history in the global context; they will be able to identify and debate about the main historiographical issues that mark the internal transformation of Europe and its international role.
2. Applied knowledge and understanding.
At the end of the course, students will be able to read critically a historical text and to make use of the specific language of history
3. Making judgements
Students will be able to reason about the historical processes; and to place them in their historical perspective; they will be able to write a critical essay.
4. Communication skills
Students will acquire the ability to orally present topics related to the subject taught, and to establish links with related disciplines and subjects
5. Learning skills
Students will be able to understand the historical evolution of political, economic and cultural processes; and to critically analyze contemporary Europe on the basis of the knowledge acquired during the semester


A basic understanding of the XX Century History is required in order to successfully attend the course.


The course will analyse the role played by Europe in the contemporary world, retracing the main political structure and cultural tendencies and focusing on the second half of the Twentieth century. During the classes some crucial issues will be analysed in depth, as:
- The Second World War and the end of European hegemony
- Europe to be rebuilt
- Decolonization
- The Cold War
- East Europe
- Weat Europe and the welfare state welfare state
- The unification of Europe: CECA, CEE, UE
- The Sixities
- The relationship between economic growth and environmental question
- Europe between crisis and protests
- The end of the short century and globalization

Teaching Methods

The course will include lectures with the support of audiovisual materials.

Verification of learning

Students will take an oral exam on the topics covered in class and analysed in the books included in the program. Moreover, students will be required to write an essay on the book chosen from the list, explaining its structure and its main theory, as it will be explained during the class.

The score of the exam is given by a mark out of thirty. To pass the exam students must have enough knowledge about the topics, and they must be able to critically talk about them. The ability to propose links between the various themes, to use the appropriate terminology, as well as a good grasp of the language, in general, will contribute to the evaluation of the exam.

The use of a historical atlas is recommended.
