The student will acquire a knowledge of the deep medieval roots of the society in which he lives (from political institutions to cultural, economic and religious), developing an historical sense linked to the perception of the long duration of the analyzed phenomena and especially to that of their consequences on subsequent centuries to the medieval ones. He will also learn how to place events and personalities linked to medieval history in time and space, which are generally today disclosed as timeless and lacking a precise determination of place. Finally, it will be realized that the links between cause and effect operating in societies that are ancestors of ours are similar but also different.
With the second part of the course, dedicated to the history of the Byzantine Empire, the student will perceive the centuries-old dynamics of the dialectic between East and West, analyzing the political, social, economic, religious and cultural realities of the world linked to Christian orthodoxy.
Students must be able to grasp the medieval roots of the great historical phenomena of the Mediterranean and of Europe of our time.


A good knowledge of geography, history and Italian language and literature.

The course aims to provide a critical knowledge of medieval history, with particular attention to the following themes: the political and cultural dissolution of the late ancient Mediterranean unity, the spread of Christianity and its ecclesiastical institutions, the birth and evolution of the kingdom Roman-Germanic, the advent of Islam and its Mediterranean diffusion, the birth of Europe with the empire of Charlemagne, the dissolution of the state and the advent of local powers in post-Carolingian Europe, the expansive phase of the European economy and urbanism in the centuries following the year 1000, the reform of the Roman church, the crusades, the repression of heresies and the new begging spirituality, the communal phenomenon in central-northern Italy and the Norman-Swabian monarchy. Angevin and Aragonese in the South, the great feudal monarchies of the Alps, the Black Death and its consequences in social, economic and political, the states of the first R inascimento.
In the second part of the course there will be a thematic study dedicated to the history of the Byzantine Empire, from late antiquity to the definitive Turkish-Ottoman conquest of the fifteenth century. The main topics will be those related to the age of Justinian, the crisis of the seventh century, the religious controversy between Eastern Christianity and the Roman papacy, the evangelization of the Slavic peoples, the long phase marked by the 'basil' dynasty, the subsequent Comnena dynasty to the role of Byzantium in the age of the Crusades, to the disintegration of the Byzantine ecumene from the 13th to the 15th century.

Teaching Methods

The teaching will be delivered primarily in presence, integrated and "augmented" with online strategies, in order to ensure its use in an innovative and inclusive way.

Verification of learning

oral exam (with at least 3 questions on general topics with at least 3 questions on general topics for each of the two parts), but with any written test reserved for attending students only

- criteria for assigning the final grade

in the written test the following elements will be taken into account:
• ability to describe and argue synthetically, without going off topic
• ability to provide the fundamental chronological and geographical coordinates of the phenomena analyzed
• grammatically and syntactically correct writing using an appropriate terminology,
• ability to write a written text with a logical conducting thread

in the oral test the following elements will be taken into account:
• ability to frame the topic especially in a chronological and geographical sense,
• ability to distinguish a fundamental notion from a complementary one,
• expressive mastery and use of appropriate terminology,
• critical processing capacity of concepts
